utter [ˋʌtɚ] verb

原句: it was the first word she uttered since I came into the room.

1. to say something

for example: As soon as he'd uttered the words he regretted them.

2. to make a sound

for example: She utterd a sound somewhere between joy and pain.

 

 deft  [dɛft] adjective

原句: Evidently it surprised her as much as it did me, for she yawned and with a series of rapid, deft movements stood up into the room.

retort [rɪˋtɔrt] verb

1. not able to believe something, or not wanting to believe it

2. showing that you find something hard to believe

for example: Dan's voice was incredulous= incredulously
