是威尼斯影展的最高榮譽，從1949年開始頒發，被認為是電影界最高榮譽之一。1970年增設榮譽金獅獎，表揚對於電影有重要貢獻的工作者。1947年與1948年頒發的威尼斯國際大獎（Grand International Prize of Venice）與金獅獎地位相同，都是威尼斯影展的最高榮譽。1936年至1942年之間，威尼斯影展的最高榮譽則是頒給最佳義大利片與最佳外語片的墨索里尼獎。
